Anti-reflective Glass: Definition and Working Principle

Anti-reflective glass is a specially treated type of glass. Its main function is to reduce or eliminate light reflection from the glass surface, thereby increasing light transmittance and making objects seen through the glass clearer and more realistically colored.

Working Principle:

Traditional glass typically has a reflectivity of around 8% (double-sided). Anti-reflective glass achieves its anti-reflective effect by coating or etching one or more extremely thin layers of special materials (such as silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, etc.) onto its surface.

Interference Method (Coating):

The most common method. By precisely controlling the thickness of the coating layer, the reflected light interferes with the light reflected back from the inner surface of the glass, canceling each other out and achieving an extremely low reflectivity. High-quality anti-reflective glass can reduce reflectivity to 0.5% or even lower.

Anti-Glare (AG) Etching:

This is a common method for treating anti-glare glass. Through chemical or mechanical etching, a microscopic rough structure is created on the glass surface, causing diffuse reflection of incident light. While this effectively reduces glare, it's often considered a broader "anti-reflective" solution and differs slightly from strictly AR-coated glass.
