What is TCO glass?

By admin / Date Oct 03,2025

TCO glass stands for Transparent Conductive Oxide. Therefore, TCO glass is a glass substrate coated with one or more thin layers of transparent conductive oxide.

The core of this glass is its ability to achieve two seemingly contradictory properties:

  • High transparency: It allows maximum transmission of visible light.
  • High conductivity: It can efficiently conduct electrical current.

It is this unique combination that makes TCO glass a key material in many optoelectronic devices.

Main Components and Types of TCO Glass

Common TCO thin film materials include:

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO): This is one of the most widely used TCO materials, particularly dominant in touch screens and LCD displays.

  • Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO): FTO has excellent chemical stability and heat resistance, making it a commonly used conductive glass in thin-film solar cells (such as dye-sensitized solar cells and perovskite solar cells).

  • Aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO): A relatively low-cost alternative to indium, it is also used in some photovoltaic applications.

Applications of TCO Glass in Photovoltaics

TCO glass is a core component in the photovoltaic industry, particularly in the manufacture of thin-film solar cells (such as amorphous silicon, microcrystalline silicon, cadmium telluride, or copper indium gallium selenide cells).

  • As the front electrode: In a thin-film cell structure, TCO glass is located at the top layer of the cell, serving as both a "window" to allow sunlight to enter and a transparent conductive layer to collect and conduct photogenerated carriers.

  • Light Management: Excellent TCO film design (such as using specific surface topography) can also scatter incident light, increasing the optical path and improving the absorption efficiency of light energy. This is known as the light-harvesting effect.

The Difference Between TCO Glass and Photovoltaic Module Backsheet Glass

It is worth noting that you may have also paid attention to photovoltaic module backsheet glass. Although both involve glass, their uses are distinct:

  • TCO glass (usually the front glass) primarily functions as a conductor and transmits light, making it the core functional layer for power generation.

  • The backsheet glass of a photovoltaic module, located on the back of the module, provides support, insulation, protection, and maximizes light utilization through high reflectivity (enameling, for example, can achieve over 75% reflectivity). However, it does not perform any electrical conductivity. The two are distinct photovoltaic glass products in terms of design and requirements.

TCO glass is a cornerstone of modern technology, particularly in solar photovoltaics and display technology. By perfectly combining transparency and conductivity, it solves the critical problem of both light and current flow in photovoltaic devices. TCO glass plays a vital role in driving efficiency improvements in the photovoltaic industry and improving the performance of display devices.
