What is Photovoltaic Module Cover Glass?

By admin / Date Dec 26,2025

In the current global wave of green energy transition, photovoltaic (PV) power generation has become one of the most watched clean energy sources. As the "first line of defense" for solar cell modules, the quality of Photovoltaic module cover glass directly determines the power generation efficiency and lifespan of a photovoltaic power plant.|

1. Definition of Photovoltaic Module Cover Glass

Photovoltaic Module Cover Glass is a special type of glass installed on the outermost layer of a solar cell module to protect the cells from environmental damage and ensure efficient sunlight transmission. Because it is on the outermost layer of the photovoltaic panel, it not only needs extremely high light transmittance but also extremely strong weather resistance and mechanical strength.

Currently, most mainstream Photovoltaic module cover glass on the market uses ultra-clear patterned glass or ultra-clear float glass.

2. Core Role of Photovoltaic Module Cover Glass

Photovoltaic Module Cover Glass plays an indispensable multiple roles in photovoltaic systems:

High Light Transmittance (Efficiency Enhancement): High-quality cover glass typically uses a low-iron-content "ultra-clear" process, achieving a light transmittance of over 91.5%. Combined with an anti-reflective coating (AR coating), sunlight reflection can be further reduced, enhancing the light absorption capacity of the solar cells and thus increasing the power generation of the module.

Physical Protection: Photovoltaic modules are typically installed outdoors and must withstand wind, sand, hail, snow, and extreme temperature differences. The cover glass must undergo physical tempering to enhance its impact resistance.

Barrier Performance: Effectively isolates moisture and acidic/alkaline substances from corroding the internal silicon wafers, ensuring a photovoltaic module lifespan of 25 to 30 years or more.

3. Technological Trends: Ultra-clear, Anti-reflective, and Lightweight

With the iteration of photovoltaic technology, the cover glass for photovoltaic modules is also constantly undergoing technological upgrades:

Ultra-clear Patterned Glass vs. Ultra-clear Float Glass

Ultra-clear Patterned Glass: The surface has a specific pattern (such as a velvety finish), which effectively reduces specular reflection and creates a light-trapping effect, increasing the absorption of oblique light, making it the preferred choice for crystalline silicon modules.

Ultra-clear Float Glass: The surface is flat and is more commonly used in thin-film solar cell modules.

Anti-reflective coating technology

Coating the glass surface with a nano-scale silica film reduces reflectivity, increasing overall light transmittance to approximately 93%-94%.

Lightweighting and double-glass modules

To reduce system load and cost, cover glass is trending towards thinner sheets. Traditional 3.2mm glass is gradually being replaced by 2.0mm or even thinner glass, especially in double-glass modules (using glass on both the front and back), where the application of thinner glass significantly improves the back-side gain.

4. How to choose high-quality photovoltaic module cover glass?

When purchasing or evaluating photovoltaic modules, the following indicators can be used to judge the quality of cover glass:

Iron content: The lower the iron content, the whiter the glass and the better the light transmittance (typically, iron content below 150ppm is required).

Temperature: Whether the particle size is uniform and whether the bending strength meets standards.

Weather resistance: Whether the coating layer easily peels off under UV radiation and humid conditions.

Photovoltaic module cover glass is not just a transparent panel for "shielding from wind and rain," but also one of the core components for improving the conversion efficiency of photovoltaic power plants. With the advancement of materials science, lighter, more transparent, and stronger glass technologies will continue to help the photovoltaic industry reduce costs and improve efficiency.
